As a local business here in Arizona, you must now realize over 50% (I think even more) of the people looking for local products and services have thrown away their yellow page book in replacement for the convenience of searching online.
What’s that mean for a business that stays up on current online marketing strategies?
They win! They will get the eyeballs, traffic and phone calls not their competitors.
Using local maps has become an easy way for a person to find a business in Scottsdale or Phoenix. Or, for that matter, in any state or city across the U.S.
But to get found in the google, bing or yahoo maps you must know what you’re doing, or get a professional, local marketing company to optimize it for you. If you try it yourself, you will likely miss very key elements that will not get you near the top of local map search results, or quite possibly not even on the first page.
You then have to put a value on your time. If you are the owner of a local plumbing,
accounting, plastic surgeon or dental company, do you have the time to do that tedious work? If I were to guess, I’d say no you don’t.

49% of mobile and tablet users conduct local business searches on apps (comScore Local Search Usage Study 02/12)
Mentioning a location in an ad or search result can increase click-through rates up to 200% (ThinkNear 2012 via MediaPost)
20% of telecom, 30% of restaurant, and 25% of movie searches are from cell phone (Google)
Sometimes it’s helpful for the user to see your location on the map right on your website. They can get a clear picture of where you are located and if it’s convenient for them to come to your business.
You need to be careful as it can ruin the look and feel of your website if it’s not blended in with the design. I’ve seen horrific looking sites with BIG maps right on the homepage, and it’s not pretty.
You’re better off having it near the bottom of your homepage, so it’s there, but not an eye-sore.

Social proof has been around for decades, but with the explosion of online reviews and local business directories, it’s crucial you stay up on it, and encourage your happy customers to write these reviews for your business.
Sometimes a special discount can entice a customer to take the time to do it, but either way, the more positive reviews your business has the better your local listings (ie. Google+ Local, Maps, etc.) rank.
There is a specific strategy, that can be both tedious and time-consuming to get listed on all the major directors locally, but it’s an investment worth making to do it right the first time. Trying to do it yourself, when you need to focus on your business is a bad decision.
